Tuesday Tune-Up – Why Light Exercise and Walking Matter
Why Light Exercise and Walking Matters
I’m focusing on why maintaining mobility and supporting recovery are central goals in Physical Therapy. Light exercise and walking play pivotal roles in achieving these. Here's why:
1. Enhances Circulation: Gentle movements boost blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to muscles and tissues that help to speed up healing.
2. Reduces Stiffness: Regular walking keeps joints flexible, reducing discomfort and maintaining range of motion. It's the "move it or lose it theory once again."
3. Supports Mental Health: Light activity releases endorphins, improving mood and reducing stress - Couldn’t we all use a little stress relief?
4. Builds Endurance Safely: Low-impact exercises strengthen muscles gradually without overstraining them. 5. Promotes Balance and Coordination: Consistent walking improves stability, reducing the risk of falls. Yes, it reduces the risk of falling, which greatly enhances your ability to do the things you want to do!
Tips for Getting Started:
Start with short, manageable walks and if you want a real challenge head down to Manitou Springs and take on the Incline!
Choose comfortable, supportive footwear. Visit your local store - I like Runner’s Roost since they have such personable service and my kids work there!
Listen to your body - if you think something is wrong, don’t put it off. Consult your MD or physical therapist before things get worse and it’s more difficult to get the relief you deserve.
Rest if needed - we all need it and we likely are not getting enough. The average sleep duration in America is 6.8 hours per night which is lower than it has been in a long time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours for adults aged 18-64 and 7-8 hours for those over 65. Not getting enough sleep has a direct correlation to many areas of your health so take advantage of those Z’s!!
