Tuesday Tune-Up – Understanding & Treating Tennis Elbow

Understanding & Treating Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common condition caused by overuse, leading to pain around the outside of the elbow. It affects not just athletes but anyone engaged in repetitive arm and wrist motions.

I personally experienced this one years ago when I was doing excessive gripping motions during martial arts training and too many pull ups - yup, it hurts!

Signs to Watch For:

Elbow pain during gripping or lifting
Weak grip strength
Discomfort radiating from the forearm

Effective Physical Therapy Treatments:

Therapeutic Exercises: Eccentrically strengthen forearm muscles to reduce strain.
Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to improve mobility and decrease pain.
Activity Modification: Guidance on adjusting activities to prevent further injury.
Modalities: Shockwave therapy, ultrasound or ice for inflammation control.

Prevention Tips:

Daily stretching and strengthening exercises
Proper technique during activities
Ergonomic adjustments at work and home
