Understanding Back Pain: The Numbers Speak to Your Spine
As we continue our mission to promote wellness and recovery, I’d like to share some eye-opening statistics about back pain—a condition affecting millions worldwide. It’s one of my favorite subjects because I had back pain and it is the reason I became a Physical Therapist.
Key Back Pain Statistics:
Prevalence: Approximately 80% of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives, making it one of the most common reasons for missed work and visits to health care providers.
Chronic vs. Acute: About 20% of people with acute back pain develop chronic back pain, which means it has persisted for 12 weeks or longer. Impact on Productivity: Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and contributes to significant lost workdays annually - 30 million people in the US receive medical care for back pain each year! Treatment Trends: While many resort to medication, studies show that Physical Therapy reduces the need for opioids and improves long-term outcomes - yea for us!
